What is Thermography?

Although this military-inspired technology has been around for over 60 years, Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging, or Thermography, is just now becoming recognized in America as the next frontier in safer, more effective screening for numerous health issues.

Medical thermography uses an incredibly sensitive, high-definition thermal camera to create a digital map of skin’s surface temperature patterns, which are affected by inflammation, vascular activity, etc. The images give us unlimited information on what is occurring in your body’s systems and organs, based on an intricate map of sympathetic receptors, which lie directly beneath your skin, and direct blood flow between the skin and the body’s systems.

Think about it. Inflammation is the primary indicator that our bodies are trying to fix something. Fevers are often the first sign of illness, and inflammation is a precursor to many diseases (think: cancer, heart disease, diabetes, stroke, arthritis, etc.). Thermography is the only system that allows us to literally visualize inflammation and pain in the body. By providing us with this digital map, thermography affords us the opportunity to treat more preventively, as we are able to screen for the very first signs of disease and illness, often even before symptoms are reported.

Benefits of Thermography

This type of imaging is radiation-free, entirely private (as all images are taken using an automated camera operated from another area) and even more sensitive and exact than many traditional forms of imaging.

Perhaps most incredibly however, is the technology’s proven ability to accurately detect subtle changes in biological and metabolic activity, allowing it to distinguish cancer’s angiogenesis processes up to six years before conventional imaging. Thermography is essentially able to detect changes with enough time to allow prevention of serious issues, instead of simply discovering already advanced disease.

Thermography and Breast Health Screening

Did you know that it takes eight years for a cancerous tumor in the breast to grow large enough to be seen with a mammogram or MRI?

Thermography offers earlier detection of possible breast disease because it works in an entirely different way. It is known that when a tumor is in the early stages of development, it requires blood flow to grow and survive. New blood vessels form in a distinct pattern around the tumor to provide it with this blood flow (angiogenesis) and we are able to see this process occurring with thermographic imaging as early as two years into the development process. Because this process looks different, physiologically, from fibrocystic changes, thermography can actually distinguish between the two, saving a lot of unnecessary concern, and possibly, even medical procedures.

Thermography also provides an image of inflammation and lymphatic congestion in the breasts, which may contribute to disease, if left untreated. By screening for the early stages of, and precursors to, disease, thermography provides a truly preventive way to watch and maintain breast health, instead of simply detecting already existing cancers…and it does all this with no radiation and no compression!
