Make Your Own Healthy Toothpaste!

Thursday,January 12,2012

Having trouble finding a toothpaste that’s not loaded with toxic chemicals and flouride? Try this simple recipe to make your own!

Ingredients

2 tablespoons organic coconut oil (try Tropical Traditions brand)

3 tablespoons baking soda

1/2 individual packet of Stevia (try the boxes of individually packaged Truvia)

20-25 drops peppermint oil (you can adjust this to taste)*

Directions

Mix all ingredients in a bowl and store in a tightly sealed container.

*If you are currently taking any oral form of homeopathic medication, it is important that you don’t take it within 15 minutes of using mint products. If this will be difficult for you, try flavoring your toothpaste with natural forms of cinnamon or anise/licorice.

What’s in Your Home That Causes More Deaths than Drunk Driving?

Tuesday,January 10,2012

In 2012, the federal government will begin more actively promoting radon testing in homes, schools, and other institutions in the United States, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers and is the underlying cause of about 20,000 of the roughly 160,000 lung cancer deaths each year, according to the EPA, which is encouraging all Americans to test their homes this winter. Winter is the best time to test because the gas, which usually is released from soil, becomes trapped inside by closed windows and doors. The invisible, odorless gas has been found in every county in the United States, according to the EPA, and an estimated 8 million homes have problematic levels of radon. The gas at high levels is especially toxic in the presence of cigarette smoking, and exposure to radon in homes and workplaces causes more deaths in the United States than drunk driving, according to EPA statistics from 2003.

The effort to raise awareness about radon is part of a federal initiative – the Federal Radon Action Plan, which was first announced in June of 2011. Many people are asking ”if this is such a big deal, why aren’t we hearing more about it or seeing more action?”.  According to David Rowson, director of EPA’s Indoor Environments Division, the issue lies in the “policy debate” about “the extent the federal government should be involved in regulating homes.” They are not currently forcing private households to conduct testing, but are encouraging it. The federal government is leading by example, by testing all government-owned properties.

Home improvement stores sell radon test kits but more information can be found regarding how and why to test, and what to do should you find high radon levels, in the Home Buyer’s and Seller’s Guide to Radon, put out by the EPA.

Mammograms – Helpful or Harmful? New Analysis

Thursday,November 17,2011

From the New York Times (10/26):

Two years ago, a group of outside experts who advise the federal government raised a furor when it suggested that mammography screening to detect breast cancer early, when it is theoretically most treatable, should be scaled back. Now a new analysis published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, a journal of the American Medical Association, has found that while some women have their lives saved by mammograms, a vast majority found to have tumors do not benefit — probably because they have slow-growing cancers that would never have killed them or could have been treated at a later stage, or they have aggressive cancers that are deadly even if detected early.

The analysis, by two researchers at Dartmouth, used a variety of data sources to estimate the probability that a woman with breast cancer detected by mammography would have her life saved because of the screening. For the baseline case of a 50-year-old woman, only 3 percent to 13 percent escaped death from breast cancer thanks to early detection by mammography. As described by Tara Parker-Pope in Science Times, that translates into 4,000 to 18,000 women being helped by the test, a small portion of the 230,000 women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer annually in the U.S. and a minuscule fraction of the 39 million American women who undergo mammograms each year.

Several thousand lives saved per year is not inconsequential. But the new analysis inevitably raises questions as to whether the $5 billion spent annually on mammography screening and the millions more spent urging women to get screened might better be used for other purposes. Women will face a difficult choice. Fewer than 1 in 1,000 healthy women screened over a decade will have a cancer found at just the right moment for successful treatment. The rest will undergo a decade’s worth of radiation for no medical benefit or, worse yet, undergo unnecessary treatments that can be harmful to eliminate tumors that would never have killed them.
